Scotland’s Census 2022 was taken on 20 March 2022, a year after the ONS count behind our English city pages. The National Records of Scotland counted 620,700 usual residents in the Glasgow City council area. Of them, 203,500 (32.8%) were aged 50 or over, against 41.6% across Scotland. Within that, 18.8% were 50 to 64 and 8.1% were 65 to 74.

Six places to talk, and none asks for a ticket
None charges for entry. The first four share their hours: 10am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 11am to 5pm on Friday and Sunday.
- Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
- Opened in 1901. Dalí’s Christ of St John of the Cross hangs here, and a Spitfire is suspended from the ceiling.
- Riverside Museum
- The Tall Ship Glenlee sits beside it, which gives the afternoon a second act.
- The Burrell Collection
- Inside Pollok Country Park, so the walk there is part of the date.
- Gallery of Modern Art
- On Royal Exchange Square, for modern art.
- The Mitchell Library
- More than a million items. Open 9am to 5pm, until 8pm on Tuesday and Thursday, and closed on Sunday.
- Glasgow Cathedral
- Historic Environment Scotland describes it as having come through the Reformation almost entirely intact. A working church, so hours vary; donations are welcome.
The Hunterian calls itself the oldest public museum in Scotland; check its entry terms first.
A circle you cannot get lost on
The Subway opened on 14 December 1896 and is the third-oldest underground in the world, after London and Budapest. It’s one circle of 15 stations, 6.5 miles round, and it has never been extended, so the only decision is which way round.
Sixty is the magic number
Live in Scotland and you can apply for a National Entitlement Card at 60, which covers bus travel under a Scotland-wide scheme. That’s a Scottish arrangement, not the English bus pass, which waits for State Pension age. On the Subway the card is a concession on pay-as-you-go credit, though not before 9am on weekdays. A Senior Railcard takes a third off rail fares from 60.
Three places within reach, nearest first
Each share is the proportion aged 50 or over in that council area at the 2022 census.
- Paisley, 9 minutes from Central. That’s the fastest train, and Renfrewshire’s share is 41.8%. The teardrop Paisley pattern is named after the town, whose abbey dates from the 12th century.
- Hamilton, as little as 24 minutes from Central. South Lanarkshire’s share is 42.9%. Hamilton Mausoleum has one of the longest reverberation times of any man-made building, at 15 seconds.
- Dundee, as little as 1 hour 17 minutes from Queen Street. A direct ScotRail train reaches a separate city, with a share of 37.1%. Dundee became the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design in 2014, and V&A Dundee has no entry charge.
Green enough to earn the nickname
The Dear Green Place comes from an old name for Glasgow usually read as “green hollow”. Glasgow Green, the city’s oldest park, covers 55 hectares beside the Clyde, and Pollok Country Park has 146 hectares and a fold of Highland cattle. The West Highland Way starts at Milngavie, north of the city, and runs 96 miles to Fort William.
Company on the move, and a diary to fill
The Ramblers’ Glasgow Group lists mostly weekend walks of about 10 to 12 miles, with occasional midweek outings of 3 to 6; check the Ramblers site for current walks. The Bearsden and Milngavie group welcomes all adults, from easy days out to strenuous ones.
- January: Celtic Connections, based at the Royal Concert Hall
- August: the Piping Live festival, then the World Pipe Band Championships on Glasgow Green
