Manchester and around
Mature Dating in Manchester: Meet Mature Singles in Manchester
Four museums for an easy first date, 99 tram stops for meeting halfway, and Salford, Stockport and Altrincham on the doorstep.
A young city with wiser neighbours
Mature dating in Manchester has two halves: a city that looks young on paper, and the towns around it, where more residents are 50 or over. Sage Dating has members in Manchester, and Salford, Stockport and Altrincham are on its doorstep.
The Office for National Statistics counted 551,937 people in the Manchester local authority district at the 2021 census. Of them, 23.7% were aged 50 or over, against 37.8% across England. Around it, the share is 40.0% for Stockport, 36.9% for Trafford, which is where Altrincham sits, and 29.3% for Salford. In 2010 Manchester also became the first UK city to join the World Health Organisation’s network of age-friendly cities.

Let the Metrolink do the work
The Metrolink began in 1992 and now has 99 stops on eight lines, described as the most extensive light rail system in the UK. It reaches Altrincham, Bury, Eccles, Rochdale, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Airport, and both Piccadilly and Victoria stations are stops. The older person’s travel pass works like this:
- Who qualifies
- You live in Greater Manchester and are old enough to qualify for the State Pension.
- On the bus
- Every bus in Greater Manchester, at any time. Since March 2026 there has been no 9.30am start.
- On the tram and train
- Metrolink and trains within Greater Manchester can be added, off-peak, for an extra charge for the year.
- Further afield
- Local buses across England from 9.30am to 11pm on weekdays, and all day at weekends and on public holidays.
Neighbours worth the trip
- Salford (29.3% aged 50 or over) has been a city since 1926. The Lowry at Salford Quays opened on 28 April 2000.
- Stockport (40.0%) sits where the Goyt and Tame meet to form the Mersey, and its viaduct of 1840 has 27 brick arches.
- Altrincham (36.9%, in Trafford) is a market town with a charter of 1290, at the end of the Metrolink line.
Something to look forward to
- May: Great Manchester Run
- July, every other year: Manchester International Festival
- August bank holiday: Manchester Pride
- October: Manchester Literature Festival
Between festivals, Manchester Weekend Walkers, a Ramblers group aimed at people aged 40-plus though everyone is welcome, lists public-transport walks into the countryside all year round. South Manchester u3a says members can join any of its groups, from book groups to creative writing, and u3a membership is open to anyone not in full-time employment.
Heaton Park covers over 600 acres and has its own Metrolink stop. The Peak District, the UK’s first national park, is surrounded by conurbations including Manchester, and its highest point is Kinder Scout at 636 m.
