Company on both banks of the Mersey

Mature dating in Liverpool is a river affair: the city centre on one bank, the Wirral on the other and Southport up the coast, all joined by Merseyrail. Sage Dating has members in Merseyside.

On census day, 21 March 2021, the ONS counted 486,089 usual residents in the Liverpool local authority district. Of them, 161,678 (33.3%) were aged 50 or over, against 37.8% across England, and 197,383 (40.6%) were between 40 and 79.

Two cathedrals and a street called Hope

Hope Street has a cathedral at each end. Liverpool Cathedral was built between 1904 and 1978, and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, nicknamed Paddy’s Wigwam, was consecrated in 1967. Neither charges for entry, though donations are welcome. On the same street are the Philharmonic Hall, home of a society founded in 1840, and the Everyman Theatre.

Meet at the Pier Head

The Pier Head is home to the Three Graces, the Royal Liver, Cunard and Port of Liverpool buildings, and to the ferry across the Mersey. The Royal Albert Dock, opened in 1846, is close by, and the Cavern Quarter, around Mathew Street, has statues of Cilla Black and John Lennon. National Museums Liverpool lists no entry charge for its main venues, including the Walker Art Gallery and the Museum of Liverpool. The Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum are closed for redevelopment, so check the group’s website for what is open.

A short train to somewhere new

Merseyrail’s underground loop calls at Moorfields, Liverpool Central, James Street and Lime Street. Birkenhead’s built-up area had 109,835 residents at the 2021 census, and Southport’s 94,440.

The Allerton Oak in Calderstones Park is estimated to be 1,000 years old, and the grounds of Speke Hall, a Tudor manor begun in 1530, look over the Mersey estuary. Liverpool Ramblers list over 200 walks a year, from short to long, and the town hall runs ticketed guided tours on selected dates, booked through Liverpool City Halls.

Not for now. It’s temporarily at RIBA North on Mann Island, with no entry charge, and Tate says it will reopen at the Royal Albert Dock in 2027.

Can I walk out to the Hilbre Islands?

Which is Liverpool’s main line station?

Lime Street, which opened in August 1836 and lets you reach every platform without steps. St George’s Hall, opened in 1854, greets you as you leave, and Merseyrail’s underground loop stops at the station too.

Is Liverpool’s Chinatown the oldest in Europe?

According to Visit Liverpool, it was the first Chinatown established in Europe, and the city is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe. The Chinese Arch was imported piece by piece from Shanghai, a city Liverpool is twinned with.
