Leeds and West Yorkshire

Mature Dating in Leeds: Meet Mature Singles in Leeds

Wander the Victorian arcades off Briggate, browse the market where Marks & Spencer began in 1884 and meet under the town hall’s clock tower.

The unofficial capital of Yorkshire has company to spare

Mature dating in Leeds starts with a very large district and a ring of older neighbours, from Harrogate to Wakefield. Sage Dating has members in West Yorkshire.

At the 2021 census the Office for National Statistics counted 811,952 residents in the Leeds district, and 266,460 of them, 32.8%, were 50 or over, against 37.8% across England. Add everyone from 40 to 79 and the count is 332,425, or 40.9%. The older share is higher next door, at 46.0% for Harrogate and 39.5% for Wakefield, though Bradford sits at 32.6%.

Locals are called Loiners. Mature dating near me shows how members are matched by distance, over 40s dating describes who has joined, and the locations page links the rest of our cities.

Arcades, a market and a town hall to meet under

Start on Briggate and let the buildings do the talking:

  1. Thornton’s Arcade. Completed in May 1878 as the first arcade in the city. Under its clock, four life-sized wooden figures from Ivanhoe, Richard I, Friar Tuck, Robin Hood and Gurth, strike a bell.
  2. Queens Arcade and County Arcade. Queens Arcade opened in 1889, and the County Arcade, by Frank Matcham, was completed in 1903 and forms the Victoria Quarter with Cross Arcade.
  3. Kirkgate Market. Open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 5.30pm and closed on Sundays. The penny bazaar that became Marks & Spencer began here.
  4. Leeds Town Hall. Opened on 7 September 1858 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, with a 225 ft clock tower and four Portland stone lions added in 1867. It’s Grade I listed, like the Corn Exchange, which opened in 1864 and has a dome modelled on a corn hall in Paris.

By day, with no ticket price to fret over

The Royal Armouries at Leeds Dock has no entry charge and opens from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday in term-time and every day in school holidays and on bank holidays. Allow 20 to 25 minutes to walk from the railway station.

Leeds Art Gallery on The Headrow and Kirkstall Abbey are both Give What You Can venues, so you choose what to pay. The abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery in a public park on the north bank of the Aire.

By night, a gas-lit cinema and an opera house

Hyde Park Picture House is a community cinema and a registered charity. It opened on 7 November 1914 and is believed to be the only remaining gaslit cinema in the world. Its Tuesday Wonders strand shows documentaries, and some screenings are pay what you can.

Leeds Grand Theatre opened on 18 November 1878 and has been the home of Opera North since 1978.

Three trains that make a day out

  • Harrogate

Mostly 35 minutes by Northern train. The Stray is 200 acres, the Royal Pump Room holds a sulphur well, and the district is 46.0% aged 50 or over.

  • Saltaire

Mostly 15 to 17 minutes. Sir Titus Salt commissioned the village in 1851, and it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2001. Salts Mill has several rooms of David Hockney’s work.

  • Wakefield

Mostly 12 to 13 minutes. The cathedral spire, at 247 ft, is the tallest in Yorkshire, and The Hepworth Wakefield opened on 21 May 2011 beside the River Calder.

Easier and cheaper to get about with a pass or a railcard

The West Yorkshire senior pass is for permanent residents who have reached State Pension age, and works after 9.30am on weekdays and all day at weekends and bank holidays. Like other English bus passes, it works across England but not across the whole UK. For rail, a Senior Railcard is open to anyone aged 60 and over and takes a third off fares. Leeds station has 18 platforms, with trains run by London North Eastern Railway, CrossCountry, TransPennine Express and Northern.

Room to walk and talk

  • Roundhay Park covers more than 700 acres of parkland, lakes, woodland and gardens, with a walled garden built about 1816. Louis Le Prince filmed the Roundhay Garden Scene nearby on 14 October 1888, believed to be the oldest surviving film.
  • Golden Acre Park in Bramhope is 179 acres, opened as a private amusement park in 1932 and taken over by the council in 1945. It holds national plant collections of lilac, hosta and daylily.
  • The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs 127 miles to Liverpool, and its towpath passes Kirkstall.
  • The Leeds Country Way is a 62-mile circular footpath around the city, waymarked with an owl.

Groups where the same faces turn up

  • Leeds Older People’s Forum is a registered charity with a map to help you find a local community group or Neighbourhood Network.
  • Leeds Philharmonic Society has over 130 singing members who perform at Leeds Town Hall, and its site mentions an audition panel for new singers.
  • The University of the Third Age in Leeds is a registered charity with special-interest groups, and its own site has the meeting dates.
  • Leeds Ramblers list walks such as an Otley literature run (check the Ramblers site for current ones), and the u3a has over 1,000 local branches across the UK.
