A young city, yet more than 112,000 residents are 40 to 79
Mature dating in Nottingham rewards a wide lens. The tram and the Robin Hood Line run out to Beeston, Hucknall, Sutton in Ashfield and Mansfield, and Sage Dating has members in Nottinghamshire.
On census day, 21 March 2021, the ONS counted 323,631 usual residents in the Nottingham local authority district. Of them, 26.8% were aged 50 or over, against 37.8% across England, and 13.5% were aged 20 to 24, against 6.0% for England, which helps explain the lower share. That still leaves 112,336 residents (34.7%) between 40 and 79.
Hop on the tram
Nottingham Express Transit opened in 2004 and now has 50 stops over 32 km, with trams every 7 to 15 minutes, or every 3 to 10 in the centre. It reaches Beeston, Toton Lane and Hucknall, and Beeston is about 20 minutes from the station by tram; check the current timetable.
Or take the Robin Hood Line
East Midlands Railway runs trains between Nottingham and Worksop roughly every hour, taking about 67 minutes end to end. The line stops at Hucknall, at Sutton Parkway for Sutton in Ashfield, and at Mansfield.
An older person’s bus pass starts at State Pension age, from Nottingham City Council if you live in the city or Nottinghamshire County Council if you live in the county. Either pass covers buses and the tram from 9.30am to 11pm on weekdays and all day at weekends and bank holidays, and elsewhere in England it covers local buses only. A Senior Railcard is open from 60.
Three towns beyond the boundary
Beeston
About 52,000 residents live here. The tram arrived in 2015, but the station dates from 1839, and a factory site nearby has three listed modernist buildings by the engineer Owen Williams.
Sutton in Ashfield
It had 36,404 residents at the 2021 census. Sutton Parkway station is on the Robin Hood Line, and Kings Mill Reservoir lies within the town.
Mansfield
Its built-up area had 63,445 residents at the 2021 census. A market town with a royal charter of 1227, it has a viaduct of 1875 and a museum that opened in 1904.
More going on underneath than you would think
In April 2025 there were 924 known man-made caves under the city, all cut into the sandstone for houses, cellars and workplaces. The Lace Market, once the city’s industrial centre, produced lace renowned throughout the world, and its red brick warehouses now house creative businesses. In December 2015 UNESCO named Nottingham a City of Literature, and the city’s literature site names Byron, Lawrence and Whipple.
Park, hall, forest: three dates in order

- Sherwood Forest. The Country Park covers 450 acres, takes in areas of ancient woodland and has no entry charge, and the Major Oak near Edwinstowe is thought to be between 800 and 1,200 years old.
Prefer a roof? Nottingham Contemporary (book a no-charge ticket online or at reception) and Green’s Windmill in Sneinton, built soon after 1807 by the baker George Green, father of the mathematician, have no entry charge, the windmill whenever it’s open.
