Birmingham and the West Midlands

Mature Dating in Birmingham: Meet Mature Singles in Birmingham

Canals, Symphony Hall and the busiest railway station outside London give a first date in Birmingham plenty to look at.

A second city for second chances

Mature dating in Birmingham reaches well past the city centre, to Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Wolverhampton, and all three have trains to New Street. Sage Dating has members in the West Midlands, and Birmingham is often called the second city of the United Kingdom.

The Birmingham local authority district, which includes Sutton Coldfield, had 1,144,918 residents at the 2021 census, according to the Office for National Statistics. Of them, 29.3% were aged 50 or over, against 37.8% across England, and 16.2% were aged 50 to 64. Solihull stands at 41.5% and Wolverhampton at 34.8%.

Three places, one station

Birmingham New Street had 36.6 million entries and exits between April 2024 and March 2025, more than any other station outside London.

Solihull’s St Alphege Church was founded about 1220 and has a 168 ft spire. Sutton Coldfield is the Royal Town: Henry VIII granted it a charter on 16 December 1528. Wolverhampton became a city on 31 January 2001 and is the end of the Metro line.

Along the water

The Birmingham Canal Navigations ran to about 160 miles at their peak, and just over 100 miles are navigable today. The Main Line reaches Gas Street Basin in the centre, and canalside Brindleyplace has the Ikon Gallery, with no entry charge, Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm.

Curtain up

The Hippodrome is described as the busiest single theatre in the UK and is the home stage of Birmingham Royal Ballet, which moved to the city in 1990. Symphony Hall, opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 12 June 1991, is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Daytime dates with plenty to look at

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on Chamberlain Square has no entry charge for general admission, with donations welcome. It holds the Staffordshire Hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold, found in 2009, and more works by Edward Burne-Jones than any other collection in the world. The Jewellery Quarter is said to produce 40% of the jewellery made in the UK, and Bournville, the model village founded by the Quaker Cadbury family, has a station painted Cadbury purple.

Birmingham: your questions

Does Sage Dating reach beyond Birmingham itself?

Yes. Sage Dating has members in the West Midlands, and Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Wolverhampton are all a train ride from New Street. Other members see only your nearest town or city, not your address.

Is Sutton Coldfield part of Birmingham?

Yes. The Royal Town sits inside the city boundary and had 93,515 residents at the 2021 census. Its railway opened on 2 June 1862, and the Cross-City Line now links it with New Street.

Where do I catch a train to London?

Moor Street serves Chiltern Railways trains to London Marylebone, and New Street is served by Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry among others. Our London page covers the other end.

Where does the West Midlands Metro run?

Line 1 runs between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. It opened on 30 May 1999 and was extended to Edgbaston Village in July 2022, with more stops opening towards Digbeth and Dudley.
